A testimony of Jesus Christ

As we skim through Words of Mormon 1:16 we see that in this time period there had developed some False Christs, False Preachers, contentions, dissentions, and surely many other things that we also see today. However, there is something comforting in Verse 18. It states, "Wherefore..., King Bejamin, by laboring with all the might of his body and the faculty of his whole soul, and also the prophets, did once more establish peace in the land". When first reading this we're aware that King Benjamin worked very hard to get these things out of the land, but he also had help from people; the prophets.

In Revelations 19:10 we learn that the testimony of Christ is the Spirit of prophecy. These "prophets" that helped king Benjamin get rid of the evil were people like you and me, but with a very firm testimony of Christ. God wishes we were all prophets, as Moses states in Numbers 11:29 In his exact words he writes, "would God that all his people were prophets and the Lord would put his Spirit upon them!"

In order for us to resist the temptations and the falsities that Satan brings in our lives, we must be powerfully endowed with a testimony of Jesus Christ the Savior. Alma 37 explains this need as Alma teaches his son Helaman "Preach unto them repentance, and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ; teach them to humble themselves and to be meek and lowly in heart; TEACH THEM TO WITHSTAND EVERY TEMPTATION OF THE DEVIL, WITH THEIR FAITH ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST (italics and capitalization added).

I know that through our faith and testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ we can resist completely the temptations that Satan puts before us, but this requires that we gain more faith in Him, and that we strengthen our testimonies such that it may become even as "the prophets", and we become prophets (with a lower-case p) in our own sphere and responsibility. I know that the testimony of the Apostles isn't reserved just for them. They are called to BE a physical and life-lasting witness of Jesus. But we, if willing to pay the price, can gain that same testimony. It is a high price, but well worth it in the end.
